As a working mom of two young children, I know all too well the struggle of balancing my job’s demands with my family’s needs.
It was a typical Monday morning.
I was getting ready for work, ensuring my kids were fed, dressed, and ready for school on time. While my husband was running late for work and my kids were fighting over the last piece of toast.
I couldn’t help but feel guilty ☹
I was leaving my kids to work while my husband stayed home.
I thought, is this really how it’s supposed to be? How can I ensure I’m there for my family while pursuing my career?
This is a question that I have been asking myself for a long time, and through trial and error, I have learned a few tips and tricks for balancing work and family time.
According to recent statistics by the Department of Health and Human Services. 50% of working mothers struggle to successfully juggle their work and family responsibilities, while the other half have managed to strike a harmonious balance.
The inability of working moms with young children to juggle their job and family life can have far-reaching consequences. Burning out from the extra stress is one of the most common side effects, leading to mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and physical ailments. Moreover, having less time due to work will leave them without enough energy or care to provide their kids with a happy upbringing promoting healthy development.
Conversely, the offspring of these mothers may experience a deficiency in attention, emotional backing, and direction. This can also result in financial insecurity and an absence of access to quality childcare services, which could have far-reaching consequences on the family’s overall welfare.
I want to share my story and the strategies that have helped me find a better balance between my work and my family, and how it can help you too.
Setting Clear Boundaries
It’s important to set clear boundaries to protect physical and emotional well-being, as well as to respect the rights of others.
Setting boundaries allows me to communicate my needs, wants, and limits to others, and also helps me to understand and respect the boundaries of others.
When setting boundaries, it’s important to be assertive and confident in communicating my needs and limits, while also being respectful and considerate of others.
For example, if I’m feeling overwhelmed and need time, I can say something like, “I need some time alone right now,” rather than just avoiding the situation or people.
Another important aspect of setting boundaries is knowing what I am uncomfortable with.
For example, if someone asks me to do something that makes me uncomfortable or is not aligned with my values, I can say “no” and give a reason why.
It is unnecessary to please everyone, so we can set our limits and say ‘no’ when it’s not felt right, and also, we can say ‘yes’ when we are comfortable and want to do it.
Setting and adhering to boundaries isn’t always easy, but it can become second nature with effort and practice. If you’re looking for further resources on finding a balance between work, and family life, be sure to pick up the book Striking a Balance: Work, Family Life!

Prioritizing and Time Management
I understand that time is a limited resource, and it’s important to prioritize and manage my time effectively to accomplish my goals and live a balanced life.
My process for efficiently sorting tasks and appropriating my time.
- Creating a to-do list: I create a daily or weekly to stay organized and productive. By considering the urgency and significance of each task, I prioritize them accordingly – starting with the most important and urgent ones, then shifting my attention towards less pressing ones.
- Setting Clear, Specific, and Measurable Goals: Establishing concrete, specific, and measurable goals is key in my daily task management. I prioritize by setting short-term and long-term objectives, allowing me to remain concentrated on what’s important while ensuring I’m using my time as efficiently as possible.
- Use Pomodoro Technique: The Pomodoro Technique should be a go-to tool for efficient time management. By breaking up my work into manageable, 25-minute chunks interspersed with brief respites, I have found that I can concentrate more effectively on the task at hand without becoming exhausted or overworked. This method has also enabled me to maximize productivity and yield great results!
- Ensuring a Harmonious Balance Between Work and Self-Care in My Time Management: I am sure to allocate leisure activities and self-care hours to stay healthy. It is crucial that we maintain an equilibrium between productivity and recuperation.
Prioritizing and managing my time effectively will help me achieve the important things in my life, both personally and professionally, and also help me to live a more balanced and fulfilling life.
Seeking Flexibility and Support
I know seeking flexibility and support is key to healthy work-life balance.
Flexibility can come in many forms, such as
- Flexible working hours
- Remote working
- Ability to take time off when needed.
And Support can come in the form of
- Understanding and supportive colleagues
- Managers
- A workplace culture that values work-life balance in my journey to achieve balance and stability.
I have developed the following strategy that grants me the flexibility and support I need.
- I aim to be flexible with my supervisors and coworkers by having honest conversations about what I need to strike a balance between work and life. If necessary, these talks focus on the feasibility of flex hours, remote working possibilities, or even taking time away.
- To protect my well-being and values, I make sure to communicate articulately and with confidence while also advocating for myself when necessary.
- Establishing a network of understanding colleagues and confidants, both internally and externally within my workplace, is invaluable in providing me with the guidance I need. Whether asking for advice or expressing frustration, to hashing out solutions in challenging scenarios – having a strong support system makes all the difference!
- It’s of utmost importance to me that I stay abreast of workplace policies and benefits that can help promote a healthier work-life balance. For instance, employee assistance programs or mental health services are just some resources available that could be beneficial in the long run.
- When I am looking for a job, it is essential that the workplace culture prioritizes work-life balance. Consequently, when assessing potential employers and organizations to join, seeking out those with a positive reputation in this area is crucial.
Remember: Balance is not always 50/50 and it's okay to have some days or weeks that are more focused on work or family, as long as it is balanced over time.
Making the Most of Quality Time
As someone who values spending quality time with loved ones, I understand the challenges of finding time in our busy lives.
From work and other responsibilities to social media and other distractions, connecting with the people who matter most to us can be difficult.
But I believe…
Making the most of the quality time, we do have is crucial for maintaining healthy relationships and overall well-being.
Whether…
- It’s a quick coffee break with a friend.
- Family game night
- Romantic dinner with a significant other
- Taking the time to focus on the people in our lives.
It can make all the difference.
To truly make the most of quality time with loved ones,
I ensure to be engaged and invested in every moment by setting aside distractions and giving full attention to whoever or whatever is at hand. I maximize this time by being intentional about the activities we do together, such as
- Hiking,
- Cooking,
- Playing games,
which foster deeper conversations and connections. To nurture and show my love for them, I listen carefully, express appreciation, and demonstrate my commitment by paying attention to their interests and planning activities that bring joy into their lives. My relationships with those I love are of the highest importance to me. I prioritize spending time with them above all other activities to demonstrate how greatly I value these people in my life and our relationship.
I have learned that balance is essential for overall well-being and happiness. By setting clear boundaries, prioritizing and managing my time effectively, seeking flexibility and support, and making the most of quality time, I can protect my physical and emotional well-being, respect the rights of others, accomplish my goals, and build stronger relationships.
I have come to understand that the idea of balance varies for everyone. Still, by being mindful and consistently checking in with myself, I can make the necessary adjustments to achieve a balance that works for me. I realize that it takes time and practice to establish and maintain balance, but with consistent effort, I am sure to find a sustainable balance.
